A Guide to Casino Table Etiquette

Slots and other machines like video poker are enjoyable games in the casino, but playing alone could most of the time lead to boredom. Games played at the tables are also thrilling, with the added bonus of interacting with other casino patrons and players.

However, some people are reluctant to go to the tables because of this interaction. They are afraid that they might act inappropriately, therefore turning the session into a stressful one.

If you plan to visit the casino and would like to try out playing at the tables, here are a few simple casino table etiquettes:

1. Observe before joining the game

Empty chairs, especially in blackjack, do not necessarily indicate open space. Some players play more than one hand, so it would be wise to observe the table first before joining in. For roulette and craps, it would be alright for you to simply occupy an empty space on the rail.

2. Do not be overeager when buying in

You are not allowed to use hard cash to bet at table games. Instead, you must convert your cash into chips. Most casinos allow dealers at the tables to convert the player's cash into chips.

If you came in the middle of a round, wait for it to be finished before buying in. If you are at a craps table or any other dice game, never put your chips or money at the center of the table when someone is rolling the dice.

3. Not everybody likes unsolicited advice

Most heated exchanges between players stem from giving unsolicited advice or unwanted remarks. It is alright to commend a player for doing the right play, or to slightly comfort them when they lose big time. But giving unsolicited advice is never fine: the act itself is equivalent to boasting. Nobody likes to be dictated upon. If the player is making too many wrong decisions, ignore them. If you win a significant amount of time, they will eventually ask for your help.

4. Control your ego and keep your cool

Never boast about how much you are winning. Not all players are particularly fond of celebrating when they are losing. If you are on the losing side, do not take it out at the dealer or at other players. Remember that it is you who makes the actions: you decide whether to hit or stop, you roll the dice, you control your chips. Not the dealer or other players. If you don't like the players or the dealer at your table, leave and find another.

Remember, the casino is a really fun place to stay, especially if you enjoy the company of others. By following a few simple table etiquettes, you will be sure to have a stress-free night and have a good time. And who knows, you might meet some new friends too.
